My Dear John Letter to Xanga

Dear Xanga.
I'm sorry but I just can't be with you any longer.  Since we first met I've changed so much; I'm not the same person you knew back in fall of 2003.  My life is completely different now; I have different goals, different priorities, different responsibilities, a different mindset, and different people in my life; things are just different for me.  Whatever you and I once had I've lost, and it's not fair for me to keep leading you on like this.

What we had back then was real, don't be fooled.  Xanga, you and I had some good times, shared some laughs, grew together, anguished together, networked together, it was real.  I am the one who has changed; it's not you, it's me.

So rather than dragging this on further, I'll just say it straight up, Xanga I've found someone else.  I've found someone I am fonder of than you.  I'm sorry but I really think that I should stop visiting you and I probably won't be updating you any further.  It wouldn't be fair for me to tell you my new interest's domain, suffice to say it's a dot com.

If you ever need anything feel free to e-mail me, you know where to find me.  Maybe we can even share some highlights of our time together.  Xanga, please don't be hurt, I know you'll find a few thousand new subscribers in the next day anyway.  There are more bloggers in the sea.

Fare thee well,
-Darren

2007 is a brand new year

Everyone has new years resolutions, so I must follow suit.  Instead of lofty goals, I'm going to try to set minimum standards to follow, with the hopes of exceeding them.
  1. Run a 25 kilometer race in under 2 hours.
  2. Submit our tubing video to companies.
  3. Apply for grad school (masters in electrical enginering).
  4. Plan and implement regular savings and investment of my money for long term (down payment on a house eventually) and super-long term (retirement).  Put at least 10% of each paycheck into these funds with a goal of 13%
  5. Read at LEAST one book every 3 months.
  6. Go somewhere I've never been before.
  7. Read my Bible before work 4 out of 5 workdays.
  8. Increase muscle strength, to demonstrate this I must work back up to at least being able to bench press my own weight.
  9. Attempt regular practice of some sort of creative art for a minimum period of one month.
  10. Serve food from at least 20 new recipes.

P.S.  Jerry Seinfeld is doing standup comedy in St. Louis this weekend and I'm going to go see him, rawk on!

because its
17, 18, 19 routine
and here at 23 it's the same old me
and that one thing of the moment
that we all happen to like will
only very temporarily
kinda break the cycle
of the double edged sword
of being lazy and being bored
we just want more and more and more
till it's all we can afford

to keep our eyes open for just one more day
to keep on hoping that we'll stumble on a way
to keep our minds open for just one more day
cause its completely up to us
to maintain consciousness

Steensma Christmas

The Steensma Christmas was a smashing success.  A favorite quote of the night, Melissa (26) was trying to take Angela's (2) picture:
Melissa: "Can you look at me and smile?"
Angela: "I'm sorry but I can't."
Returns to busily playing with Legos.

Speaking of which, I amazingly played with Legos with Jon today.  It felt weird for two 23-year-olds to be sitting in my parent's living room playing with Legos, but life goes on huh?

Christmas Vacation

I know I don't write in here as often anymore, sad.  However recently its because I've had far better things to do.  I keep wanting to write down my thoughts and what's going on in my head, but things have been happening so rapid-fire lately that by the time I get my thoughts collected enough to write them and sit down to do it, they've gone on to something else.  So in short, here's what the last week has been:
  1. Thursday: Work until noon, drive to Grand Rapids, make a pitstop to say hi before I get all the way to Grandville, fall asleep at my mom & dad's house.
  2. Friday: Wake up, bum around, go Christmas shopping with Dave, take Cheri out to a lovely dinner at Charlie's Crab for our combo 6-month anniversary / Christmas celebration.  Go to parent's house, open presents with Cheri in the light of the Christmas tree...very romantic.
  3. Saturday: Went to the cottage to put the boat away, went Christmas shopping, went to Mars Hill with Jon and then we went to Outback to hang for a while.
  4. Sunday: Go to church, go to the Soper family Christmas with Cheri...a bit frightening.  I got interrogated by Lydia and Elizabeth, which actually was quite interesting.  What made it difficult was the entire time I was fighting off their little cousin Sam with his karate skills.  We got home late and watched Pirates of the Caribbean II until her dad started to snore, then I went home.
  5. Monday: Christmas! Woke up late, played a rousing game of Settlers of Catan with the family while eating chilli, went to Jason & Melissa's, had some egg nog & rum by the fire, opened presents, had dessert, played a game with Jason, went home.
  6. Tuesday: Lunch with Cheri, Mary, and Mason, hung with Paul, read The Silver Chair, went to see "A Night at the Museum" with Cheri & Mr. VandeBunte.
  7. Wednesday: Went hiking at Saugatuck Dunes w/ Cheri. Finished The Silver Chair, my parents had the two of us over for dinner, we then watched "Click."
  8. Thursday: Well it's just beginning but the plan so far is go over for lunch and cards with G&G Soper.
  9. Friday: Probably go to a movie with Paul.
  10. Saturday: Hang out w/ any friends who are around.  The Steensma family Christmas party is in the evening.
  11. Sunday: Schaaf family Christmas, then looking for something good to do for New Years Eve.
  12. Monday: Drive to the STL
  13. Tuesday: Work!
Here's a few past-due pictures I stole off from Jason & Melissa's blog.  Which, by the way, they just started.  If you want to check out what's up in the life of my brother and sister-in-law check out http://www.schaafjm.blogspot.com/

Okay, so I can't get the pictures up right now, I'll work on it later, but for now, here's the links:

It definitely was not a productive day at the office.  Everyone was anxious to head out for the holidays.  As I was walking in I saw a ball return, some putters, and some golf balls sitting in the middle of the aisle. Everyone was all about talking and telling what they planed to do over the break.  All employees get December 22 through January1 as holidays so it was the last day.  All I can say is I'm glad to be done for the year, it's almost like semester break with school.

I really gotta go though because every second I spend typing here is another second I could be in Michigan.  Catch you all on the flip side.  Merry Christmas and happy New Years.

~Darren
